Before you can use SMARTY abroad, you need to make an important change to your phone settings.  Select your device software below for how to's:

How does travelling in the EU work? 🌴

Data comes out of your monthly allowance or data add-ons. Calls and texts are unlimited, excluding if you're on a data-only plan.

If you’re on a plan with data over 12GB, you will be subject to our fair use roaming limit of a 12GB EU data cap each plan month.

Please see our Price Guide for more information on our Fair Use Policy.

How does travelling outside of the EU work? ✈

To use your phone when travelling outside the EU, you'll need an out-of-plan add-on. You can do this via our App or web dashboard.

Calls, texts and data when abroad will then be deducted from the add-on. It works a bit like Pay As You Go - you only pay for what you use, and not a penny more.

How can I call internationally? 📞🌎

To make an international call, you'll need an out-of-plan add-on. The cost per minute will be deducted from your add-on balance.

To get an idea of how many minutes you'll get to that destination based on the value of the add-on you buy, use our add-on helper tool!

Permanent roaming restrictions

To ensure all customers can benefit from roaming at no extra cost in the EU, we have put in place fair use policies which include safeguards to prevent prolonged periods of roaming.

We will monitor your usage, and if you spend 60 consecutive days abroad, we have the right to suspend all services on your account. This means that you will not be able to use your SIM. Roaming while in or outside the EU counts towards your consecutive use. We'll send you an alert two weeks before the suspension is applied.

If you have extenuating circumstances (for example being stuck abroad for reasons beyond your control), you should contact us as soon as possible to prevent your service from being suspended.

If you've had your services suspended and have since returned to the UK, please contact us to let us know of the change in your location, and we'll unblock your services.

See our Terms & Conditions here

Note: If your services are suspended and you have auto-renew enabled, your plan will continue to renew automatically. To disable this, head to your payment settings.

FAQ's and help

Can I tether abroad?

Absolutely, just bear in mind the 12GB fair usage roaming limit still applies.

I'm having trouble getting connected abroad

It's really important to check your SIM is set up for being used abroad. Check out our guide here

I'm experiencing a poor connection abroad

When roaming, you're connected to a local operator’s network so you may not receive the same level of coverage and speed as you’re used to on the SMARTY network.

Your device will automatically connect to the strongest supported carrier available. However, you can manually toggle to another network in your Settings to see if you receive a better connection on another operator.

What if I don't use all of my out-of-plan add-on I purchased to use outside of the EU?

If you don’t use all your add-on, you can choose to put that money towards your next month's plan or leave it as an out-of-plan add-on. If you want to move your money, just select the option to 'convert' on your dashboard.
