Travelling abroad with a SMARTY SIM
Weâve got you covered with access to your services abroad, though it can depend on a few factors. Hereâs more on how you can use your services while travelling.
How does roaming in the EU work? đ´
How does roaming in the EU work? đ´
Standard Calls and texts are unlimited, in and between EU destinations and back to the UK (unless you're on a data-only plan). For premium rate numbers, you'll require an out-of-plan add-on. You can buy one via our App or web dashboard, where you can also monitor the spending.
Data comes out of your monthly UK allowance or data add-ons. If youâre on a plan with data over 12GB, you will be subject to our fair use roaming limit of 12GB each plan month. We will send you a notification as you are reaching your roaming limit. The fair use roaming limit does not apply in the Republic of Ireland.
Please see our Price Guide for more information on our Fair Use Policy and to see which destinations are included in you EU roaming allowance.
Extending your EU roaming data
We always suggest using Wi-Fi whenever you can and keeping an eye on your data usage while travelling to save on costs. But if you need extra data, youâve got two options depending on your plan.
Remember: You'll only be able to use an add-on when you have an active plan. If you haven't renewed your plan, you won't be able to use any of our services, including any available add-ons.
Plan is lower than 12GB Data
Plan is lower than 12GB Data
When you're travelling abroad, you can use up to 12GB of data from your standard plan. If your plan includes less than 12GB, you can add more with a data add-on.
Our data add-ons can be used for EU Roaming and don't have an expiry date, so you can use them until the data runs out. We have 6 data add-ons to choose from:
1GB
2GB
4GB
5GB
10GB
15GB
Plan is higher than 12GB Data
Plan is higher than 12GB Data
On a plan with more than 12GB of data? Heading on holiday in the EU? Then there are two add-on choices for you.
1. Want to access all your monthly UK data allowance? Then get an EU Roaming pass. This pass unlocks your full unused UK data allowance, for a set number of days.
We have 2 EU roaming passes available:
1 day
3 days
Please note: This pass will only display for those on a plan higher than 12GB.
2. Running low of data in your monthly plan and roaming? If youâre on a plan with more than 12GB of data per month but youâre running low on available data, you can buy a data add on which will work in the EU. Our data add-ons donât have an expiry date and so you can use them until the data runs out
If youâre using roaming services from a third party, like a ferry company, instead of SMARTY, just keep in mind that you might run into things like high charges and spotty service. To avoid high charges, we recommend turning off roaming when on ferries.
Permanent Roaming restrictions
To ensure all customers can benefit from roaming at no extra cost in the EU, we have put in place a fair use policy for EU roaming which includes safeguards to prevent prolonged periods of roaming. Details of this can be found in our Price Guide.
We will monitor your usage, and if you spend 60 consecutive days abroad, we have the right to suspend all services on your account. This means that you will not be able to use your SIM. Roaming while in or outside the EU counts towards your consecutive use. We'll send you an alert two weeks before a suspension is applied.
If you have extenuating circumstances (for example being stuck abroad for reasons beyond your control), you should contact us as soon as possible to prevent your service from being suspended.
If you've had your services suspended and have since returned to the UK, please contact us to let us know of the change in your location, and we'll unblock your services.
Note: If your services are suspended and you have auto-renew enabled, your plan will continue to renew automatically. To disable this, head to your payment settings.
How does roaming outside of the EU work? â
How does roaming outside of the EU work? â
To use your phone when travelling outside the EU, you'll need an out-of-plan add-on. You can do this via our App or web dashboard, where you can also monitor your spending.
Calls, texts and data when abroad will then be deducted from the add-on. It works a bit like Pay As You Go - you only pay for what you use, and not a penny more.
Note: premium rate calls might not be possible when roaming outside of the EU, depending on the location and the number you're trying to call.
Check which destinations you can roam in and see the costs for roaming in those destinations in our Price Guide.
How can I call internationally? đđ
How can I call internationally? đđ
To make an international call, you'll need an out-of-plan add-on. The cost per minute will be deducted from your add-on balance.
Check how much it costs for each destination in our Price Guide.
To get an idea of how many minutes you'll get to that destination based on the value of the add-on you buy, use our add-on helper tool!
Advice of Charges Text
Heads up: When you travel abroad, youâll get a text when you arrive with useful info about the charges that apply when calling/texting or using data in that destination, Here's more information:
To opt out of receiving these text messages, you can start a chat with our Customer Care Experts at smarty.co.uk/contact between 8AM - 8PM, any day of the week. Alternatively, if you have accessibility needs, you can contact our Customer Excellence team. More information can be found here.
If you choose to opt out of the advice of charges texts, you will no longer receive text messages informing you about roaming costs in any destination you roam in, unless you opt back in. However, you can always find details of roaming costs in our Price Guide.
Your request to opt out will normally be actioned in a few minutes but can take up to 24 hours. If you roam within that 24 hour period you may still receive an Advice of Charge SMS but rest assured that your request is being processed and you do not need to contact us again.
To opt back in, simply follow the same steps and contact our team. Your request to opt back in will normally be actioned in a few minutes but can take up to 24 hours. If you roam within that 24 hour period you may not receive an Advice of Charge SMS and so please make sure that you check out the Price Guide for details of charges in your destination.
Controlling your spend
To help you control the cost of using roaming services while abroad, we automatically set a worldwide data roaming limit of ÂŁ45 on your account. You can change the limit amount at any time by starting a chat with our Customer Care Experts at smarty.co.uk/contact between 8AM-8PM any day of the week.
You wonât be able to exceed this ÂŁ45 amount, even if you've purchased additional out-of-plan add-ons (unless you have changed the limit, as detailed above). Once you reach this roaming data limit, you won't be able to make outbound calls, send texts, or use data until your limit resets. The reset occurs on the 1st of every month, and weâll notify you by text and email as you approach your limit.
If you'd like additional control over your spending, there are several ways to manually manage your connection and roaming services.
Use Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi

Tips to prevent inadvertent Roaming
Inadvertent roaming happens when your phone accidentally connects to a different country's network while youâre near a border or a maritime network (e.g. if you're on a ferry), often without you even noticing. This usually occurs because your phone automatically picks up the strongest signal, which might belong to a network in a neighbouring country or even a maritime network if youâre on a ferry. This can even happen in areas of the UK e.g. Kent, where you may connect to a French network.
When this happens, you could end up with unexpected charges for calls, texts, or data because your phone thinks youâre roaming in a different place. To help you avoid this, weâve put together some handy tips.
If you think youâve been wrongly charged for roaming, you can reach out to our team via chat, and weâll look into it to get it resolved.
Avoiding inadvertent roaming at borders / ferries
Avoiding inadvertent roaming at borders / ferries
You can take simple steps to avoid inadvertent roaming at borders, such as:
Turning Off Data Roaming: Before approaching a border, disable data roaming in your phoneâs settings (see below instructions for how). This prevents your phone from automatically connecting to another country's network, which can result in unexpected charges. This is particularly important when you are in the EU and roaming near a non-EU border country (or maritime network) as then you may not benefit from the free calls and texts, or your EU roaming data allowance. Also, if youâre in a non-EU country and near a border to another country which is in a higher charging zone then you may be charged more for your calls, texts, data usage. On ferries, where your phone may connect to maritime networks provided by the ferry's operator, it's a good idea to disable roaming or switch to airplane mode to prevent any unexpected costs.
Manually Select Your Network: Go to your phoneâs network settings and switch to manual network selection (see below instructions for how). This ensures your device stays connected to your a network in your intended country rather than hopping onto a different country's (or maritime) network. This is particularly useful near borders or on ferries where signals can overlap.
To avoid charges near the Northern Ireland border, you can use your full UK plan allowance in the Republic of Ireland.

I'm experiencing a poor network connection abroad
I'm experiencing a poor network connection abroad
When roaming, you're connected to a local operatorâs network so you may not receive the same level of coverage and speed as youâre used to on the SMARTY network.
Your device will automatically connect to the strongest supported carrier available. However, you can manually toggle to another network in your Settings to see if you receive a better connection on another operator.
What happens if 3G is switched off where I travel?
What happens if 3G is switched off where I travel?
If you have a 3G only device, unfortunately, even if your device works fine with SMARTY in the UK, it wonât work in a country where 3G has been switched off. Since youâre connected to a local network abroad, we donât have control over which devices are compatible or info on specific networks and their devices.
